Game rules
Chess is a 2-player game, here's how to play:
- Objective: Checkmate your opponent's king while protecting your own.
- Game setup: The game is played on an 8x8 board. Each player begins with 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns.
- Gameplay:
- Players take turns moving one piece at a time, following each piece's movement rules.
- Piece movement:
- King: one square in any direction.
- Queen: any number of squares in any direction.
- Rook: any number of squares vertically or horizontally.
- Bishop: any number of squares diagonally.
- Knight: moves in an L-shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular).
- Pawn: one square forward (or two squares from its starting position); captures one square diagonally forward.
- Special moves:
- Castling: a move involving the king and a rook under certain conditions.
- En passant: a special pawn capture immediately after an opponent's two-square advance.
- Promotion: a pawn reaching the last rank is promoted to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
- The goal is to checkmate the opponent's king (place it under threat of capture with no legal escape).
- Winning the game: A player wins by checkmating the opponent’s king. A draw can occur in several situations (stalemate, repetition, insufficient material, etc.).
